A New Name

—2 Samuel 12:24-25 She gave birth to a son, and they named him Solomon. The Lord loved him; and because the Lord loved him, he sent word through Nathan the prophet to name him Jedidiah.

From Abram to Abraham, from Jacob to Israel, from Solomon to Jedidiah, from Saul to Paul, God has always changed names. Since God’s plans are often different from the plans of men, God frequently sends a new name to fit his purpose.

David and Bathsheba named their boy Solomon, a name that has its root in the word shalom, meaning “blessed, happy, prosperous.” This was a name that Solomon definitely lived and fulfilled; there was possibly never a man who prospered like Solomon. But above this, the Lord had his own name for the boy: Jedidiah, meaning “praised of Jah,” because “the Lord loved him.”

What name does God have for you? Are you living out Gods ordained purpose for your life? Just as God loved Solomon and sent his word to him, so also he loves you and is speaking words into your life, into your heart, into your being. Are you listening?

This new name, this new life, is part of the joy of being born again. God sends his word into us, and we become a new creation, a brand-new person. We start over.

God wants you to be reborn into the person he planned you to be from the start. He has said, “You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again’” (John 3:7).

Lord Jesus, send your word, send a revelation of my destiny. Show me who you have created me to be. Change me daily that I may become the person you planned for me to be from before my birth.
